Andrew H. Embler began his military service in 1855 with the 71st Regiment New York Militia. Embler served with the 82nd New York Volunteers from 1861-1862, as the mustering officer of the 2nd Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac in 1863 and was commissioned as a captain with Company D, 59th New York Volunteers in 1864.
